Returning to the waters: A breathtaking morning view of Thomson's Falls in Nyahururu, Kenya, where childhood memories and natural wonder meet.

The roar of falling water fills the air as the Ewaso Narok River plunges into the gorge below. A cloud of fine mist rises from the waterfall, carried by the breeze towards visitors standing nearby.

At Thomson’s Falls in Nyahururu, the experience extends beyond the view. The sound of rushing water, the cool spray against the skin, and the trail leading closer to the falls make the visit feel immediate and alive.

A Return to the Falls

For me, however, the visit meant more than experiencing one of Kenya’s natural attractions. Returning to the falls at 25 brought me back to a place I had visited as a three-year-old with my father, who has since passed away.

I remember seeing a photograph of the two of us at the falls, although I may not be able to find it now.

Even without the photograph, knowing that I once stood in this place with him gives the location a special meaning. Returning at the age of 25 felt like experiencing the falls with new eyes. As a child, I could not fully understand the significance of the place or appreciate its beauty in the way I can now.

This time, I paid attention to the sound of the water, the breeze against my face, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature. The visit was not only an opportunity to enjoy a local attraction but also a chance to reflect on a memory that has become more precious with time.

Descending Into the Gorge

From the viewpoint, Thomson’s Falls is impressive. However, the experience becomes even more memorable when you descend the trail to get closer.

As you make your way down, the sound grows louder, and the mist becomes more noticeable. Every step along the path requires careful attention.

As I moved closer to the falls, the cool spray touched my skin, leaving me feeling refreshed and happy.

It was the kind of experience that reminds you how a simple encounter with nature can lift your mood.

Located near Nyahururu town in Kenya’s Laikipia County, Thomson’s Falls is a well-known natural attraction formed by the Ewaso Narok River as it plunges over a rocky escarpment into a gorge. The waterfall is commonly described as approximately 74 meters high.

The waterfall is associated with Scottish explorer Joseph Thomson, who visited the region in the nineteenth century and whose name became attached to the falls.

The nearby town is now known as Nyahururu. It is a town in central Kenya that derives its name from the Maasai word e-naiwurruwurr, which means waterfall, windy, or place of storms.

A Vibrant Community Hub

Today, visitors come to admire the scenery, take photographs, and experience the waterfall from different viewpoints. While the view from above offers a clear look at the water cascading into the gorge, the descent provides a more immersive encounter.Beyond its natural beauty, Thomson’s Falls has an atmosphere shaped by the people who visit and work around it.

On weekends, the site attracts many visitors who come with friends and family to enjoy the scenery and take photographs. During weekdays, people also visit for exercise, using the area as a place to walk and spend time outdoors.

The activities around the falls add another dimension to the experience. Ice cream vendors offer visitors a treat, photographers help people capture memories of their visit, and horse rides provide another way to enjoy the surroundings.

These small businesses and activities contribute to the lively atmosphere, making the attraction more than just a place to stop, look at the water and leave.

Practical Tips for Visitors

For those planning a visit, comfortable footwear is important, particularly for anyone intending to descend the trail. The rocks can be slippery, and visitors should take their time and watch their footing. It is also worth allowing enough time to enjoy the viewpoint, explore the surroundings, and appreciate the falls rather than rushing through the experience.

What makes Thomson’s Falls memorable is not simply its height or the force of the water. It is the combination of sound, movement, cool air, and the feeling of standing close to something both powerful and peaceful.

Thomson’s Falls is worth experiencing beyond the viewpoint. Whether you visit to take photographs, spend time outdoors, enjoy the mist, or discover a place with historical and personal significance, the falls offer something that stays with you after you leave.

As the roar of the water fades into the distance, the memory of the cool breeze, the rushing river, and the surrounding landscape remains.

Sometimes, a visit to a familiar place can reveal not only the beauty of the world around us but also the meaning of the memories we carry with us.
