FROM HOPE TO PROSPERITY: HOW THE NYOTA PROJECT FUND IS TRANSFORMING YOUNG LIVES
The Nyota Project Fund is a Kenyan government initiative that empowers young people through startup financing, entrepreneurship training, mentorship, and business support.
Nyota fund targets unemployed and underemployed youth aged 18–29 years, while persons with disabilities are eligible up to 35 years. The programme aims to reduce youth unemployment by enabling young people to establish sustainable businesses, create employment opportunities, and achieve financial independence.
Unlike many funding programmes that focus mainly on providing capital, the Nyota Project Fund combines financial assistance with practical skills development. Before receiving funding, beneficiaries undergo training in entrepreneurship, business planning, financial management, record keeping, marketing, customer service, digital skills, and life skills. They also receive continuous mentorship and technical support after funding to help strengthen their businesses and improve long-term sustainability.
According to a Nyota Fund officer, the programme involves mobilising youth, facilitating registration and vetting, conducting capacity-building training, appraising business plans, disbursing funds, and monitoring funded enterprises. Each successful beneficiary receives KSh 22,000, credited to the Nyota Pochi la Biashara Wallet, to purchase business equipment, stock, or other startup requirements.
The programme’s impact is reflected in the experience of “Deborah” ,a fashion entrepreneur who struggled with inadequate stock before joining the programme. After receiving KSh 22,000, she invested the funds in restocking her business, enabling her to meet customer demand consistently, increase sales, and improve her income. She now plans to expand her product range and create employment opportunities for other young people, demonstrating how the fund can support business growth.

The story also highlights the experience of Frank, who applied for the fund during both Phase One and Phase Two but was unsuccessful. Although disappointed, he remains determined to reapply and believes the selection process could be strengthened through greater grassroots involvement to ensure more deserving youth benefit from the programme. His experience illustrates that while the fund has transformed many lives, demand continues to exceed the available opportunities.
Overall, the Nyota Project Fund demonstrates that youth empowerment requires more than financial support alone. By combining startup capital, entrepreneurship training, mentorship, and ongoing business support, the programme helps young people build sustainable enterprises, create employment, and contribute to Kenya’s economic growth. Although many youth have benefited, expanding the programme would enable more aspiring entrepreneurs to access the opportunities needed to improve their livelihoods and realise their potential.

I benefitted from nyota fund , used the money to start poultry farm. Unfortunately they all died. Nyota fund can actually bé very helpfull if used well.
