Woman, 26, Found Dead in Gunny Sack in Eldoret as Residents Demand Action on Rising GBV
Police arrest two suspects as family mourns and community calls for justice following latest suspected femicide in Kapseret.
ELDORET, Kenya — Police in Eldoret have launched investigations into the killing of a 26-year-old woman whose body was found stuffed inside a gunny sack in Kipkarin Estate, Kapseret Sub-county, in a case that has intensified concerns over rising gender-based violence (GBV) in the region.
The incident has sparked renewed outrage among residents, who say violence against women is becoming increasingly common in the area. Community members are now demanding swift justice for Lilian and stronger measures to protect women from gender-based violence.
Kpseret Sub-county Police Commander Zefania Kamuren confirmed the incident, saying officers responded immediately after receiving the report.
Our officers moved in immediately, and we have two suspects in custody who are assisting us with our inquiries,” Kamuren said
He added that the body was moved to a referral hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death as detectives continue with investigations.
The gruesome killing brought a heartbreaking end to a desperate search by the victim’s family.
Lilian’s mother, Chepchumba, said she had spent days looking for her daughter before learning of her death. She described the condition in which her daughter’s body was found, alleging that her neck appeared to have been twisted and that she had injuries that caused bleeding from her nose and mouth.
“I have been looking for my child since yesterday. We didn’t know it was Chepcore who had been killed until they carried her away at midnight,” she said.
In an emotional appeal, Chepchumba urged young men in the Booster area of Kipkarin Estate to reject violence and respect the lives of women. She said her daughter’s death has left behind a young child who will now grow up without a mother’s care

The murder comes amid another reported case of violence against a woman in the same neighbourhood. A 20-year-old woman is recovering from injuries after allegedly being attacked by her former boyfriend just a short distance from where Lilian’s body was found.
The two incidents have heightened fears among residents, who are calling for increased police patrols, faster responses to reports of domestic violence and assaults, and tougher enforcement of laws aimed at protecting women.
Police have appealed to members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to come forward as efforts continue to establish the circumstances surrounding Lilian Chepcore’s death.
The latest killing adds to growing concerns over gender-based violence in Kenya, where activists and community leaders continue to call for stronger interventions, quicker investigations and tougher prosecution of perpetrators to stem the rising number of attacks against women.
